In 1999, the Janjira nuclear plant was mysteriously destroyed with most hands lost including supervisor Joe Brody's colleague and wife, Sandra. Years later, Joe's son, Ford, a US Navy ordnance disposal officer, must go to Japan to help his estranged father who obsessively searches for the truth of the incident. In doing so, father and son discover the disaster's secret cause on the wreck's very grounds. This enables them to witness the reawakening of a terrible threat to all of Humanity, which is made all the worse with a second secret revival elsewhere. Against this cataclysm, the only hope for the world may be Godzilla, but the challenge for the King of the Monsters will be great even as Humanity struggles to understand the destructive ally they have.

Review :

Though cheesy at times, it's strength lays in an effective narrative *SPOILER ALERT!*

"Godzilla" (1998) left a lot of critics, fans and audiences with a bit of a sore throat with it's radical departure from the original Godzilla. On top, ripping off Jurassic Park (the baby Zillas) didn't help much either. Since a sequel wasn't an option, years later Legendary and Warner Bros pictures opted for a reboot instead. The result is an entertaining, not entirely satisfying film.

The biggest issue is the script is cheesy at times, following a very familiar "people amongst the chaos"-survival type story most of the time. The cast turns in good enough performances though. Lead Aaron Taylor-Johnson struggles the most with a rather bland character arc, while Bryan Cranston turns in the best performance of the movie. Ken Watanabe is solid as usual, while Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins and David Strathairn provide firm support.

The good point of the movie is of course the monsters and their depiction + backstory. Changing their origins from being the creations of a nuclear fallout to being creatures of an ancient past is a welcome refreshment from the now tired old nuclear plot device. Also they behave in a quite realistic manner and in the fights, though scarce, don't resort to over the top or silly fighting moves. This no doubt can be attributed to Gareth Edwards' vision and the screenplay by Max Borenstein.

There could maybe have been an extra fight between Godzilla and the MUTO's, but all in all it's a good start to a probable franchise.
